Two years sounds like plenty — until it isn’t. A month-by-month strategy for converting your Graduate Route window into sponsored employment.

The Graduate Route gives UK masters graduates two unsponsored years. The students who convert it into a long-term career treat it as a 24-month project with a deadline — because that is exactly what it is.

The conversion timeline

  • Months 1–3: Take any professional role in your field — UK experience on the CV changes everything.
  • Months 4–12: Target the sponsor register. Over 100,000 companies hold licences; filter your applications to them exclusively.
  • Months 12–18: Convert internally. Employers sponsor proven employees far more readily than strangers.
  • Months 18–24: If sponsorship stalls, evaluate parallel routes — Ireland’s Critical Skills permit and Germany’s Blue Card both welcome UK-experienced candidates.
The sponsor licence register is public. Applying to companies that cannot sponsor you is the single most common wasted effort we see.

Salary thresholds for the Skilled Worker route include new-entrant discounts for recent graduates — for many occupations the bar is lower than students fear. We map eligible occupation codes against your degree before you even fly out.
